Competition

Ready to test your skills? NQFA members compete at regional, state, and national level through Queensland Fencing Association and Australian Fencing Federation events.

Getting Started in Competition

Most fencers begin competing after completing the Beginner Course and gaining some experience in training. Competition is optional but highly recommended — it's the best way to improve quickly and test yourself against fencers from other clubs.

NQFA coaches will help you prepare for your first competition, including equipment checks, warm-up routines, and understanding competition rules.

Your First Competition

  • Start with local North Qld tournaments hosted by NQFA
  • Progress to Queensland Fencing Association (QFA) events
  • Qualify for state and national championships via QFA
  • Represent North Queensland at Australian Fencing Federation (AFF) events

Upcoming Events

Find and register for upcoming fencing competitions through our affiliated organisations:

Queensland Fencing Association

QFA runs regular tournaments across Queensland including age group and senior events. NQFA members compete through QFA for state rankings and championships.

Australian Fencing Federation

AFF hosts national championships and international selection events. The pathway from NQFA → QFA → AFF takes fencers from local to national level.

Equipment for Competition

All competition fencers must use FIE-approved or national-level equipment. NQFA can advise on approved equipment and may have some loan gear available for beginners trying their first competition.

Required Competition Equipment:

  • FIE-approved mask
  • FIE-approved jacket, breeches, and under-plastron
  • Glove (weapon-specific)
  • Weapon (FIE or national approved)
  • Lame (conductive jacket for electric fencing)
  • Body wire and backup body wire
  • Weapon-specific mask wire

NQFA can help you source equipment. Talk to your coach about what you need.
