One of the most common questions we hear from new members is: “What do I wear? What do I need to bring?”
Here’s the wonderful answer: almost nothing to start.
For your first few sessions at NQFA, you don’t need any special gear. Just come in comfortable athletic clothing — track pants, leggings, or shorts, and a t-shirt. Flat-soled shoes like runners or trainers are perfect. That’s it.
Your First Few Sessions
When you first start, you’ll be learning footwork, basic movements, and foundational techniques. This is done in your regular workout clothes — no jacket, no mask, no weapon yet. The focus is entirely on building good habits with how you move and stand. It’s the foundation everything else is built on, and it’s where you want to get comfortable before stepping into the full gear.
Once your coaches can see you’ve grasped the basics — typically around your fourth lesson — that’s when you’ll get fitted up with the proper fencing uniform. Jacket, mask, glove, and weapon. By then you’ll understand why each piece matters, and you’ll be ready to use it properly.
What to Bring to Your Very First Session
- Comfortable athletic clothing. Track pants, leggings, shorts — whatever you’d wear to the gym. Avoid anything too loose or baggy.
- Runners or trainers. Flat-soled athletic shoes. No sandals, no thongs (yes, people ask).
- A drink bottle. You’ll be moving more than you expect.
That’s it. Seriously. No special socks, no particular brand of shirt, no fancy equipment. Just come as you are.
When You’ll Get the Full Gear
After a few sessions, once your coaches are happy with your footwork and basic technique, you’ll be fitted with the full fencing uniform. This includes:
- Fencing jacket — padded and flexible, designed to protect you during bouts
- Mask — gives you a clear field of vision while keeping you safe
- Glove — for your weapon hand
- Foil — the weapon beginners learn with
All of this is provided by the club. You don’t need to buy anything until you’re sure you love the sport — and by then, we’ll help you find the right gear at the right price.
What You Don’t Need to Worry About
- You don’t need to be fit. Fencing builds fitness — you don’t need to arrive with it.
- You don’t need to be flexible. The lunges come with practice, and everyone progresses at their own pace.
- You don’t need to buy anything upfront. Use the club’s gear while you’re learning.
